Seriously, science is anything but mad. It’s more like pure happiness wrapped up in
an academic cover. A good number of the
4th graders this year are participating in the afterschool program
where they are discovering more about science, the universe, and
astronomy. Each week they learn and then
finish off the hour with a hands-on activity where they actually construct a
project to take home. Meeting in the 4th
grade classroom, it’s not unusual to see constructed models flying above the
desks. Last week students enjoyed
launching rockets.
But science isn’t just exciting after school. In the 4th grade, students are
excited to begin a new unit of study. It’s
all about life sciences now. We are
discovering about the ecosystems and how organisms depend on one another. What better way to discover interdependence
than through an owl pellet dissection lab where students infer about the diet
of the owl based on the evidence they find?
Every student was fully engaged during this activity. They worked hard together and the excitement
seemed to build with each new bone that they were able to match up with the
bone chart. As our ESLR’s state, the
students are learning how to become critical thinkers as they investigate
beyond the obvious through inquiry based science labs.
