January 2013

Coming back from Christmas break, the students jumped right into learning with no delay.  In Bible, we are learning about how sin separates us from God, but God has provided a way for all of us to be restored to a relationship with him.  We’ve just started long division and have the tools for a successful unit of study.  In language arts, we will be writing a book review, are working on creating a book summary of our own, and have learned note taking and outline skills.  Students learned about different types of fascinating ecosystems in science, but the highlight has definitely been social studies.  From videos, to our in-class gold rush, to a WebQuest activity which incorporated the use of student laptops, art, and map skills, students chose their own route from the East to West and created a map to guide them.

WebQuest activity as students used online resources as they put themselves in the place of a forty-niner.

Students studied the living and nonliving components of ecosystems right on campus!

During our Gold Rush, Forty-Niners, I mean 4th graders found out that some struck rich, some found false gold, and some found little to none! Very similar to what the miners experienced over 150 years ago!
